SPACE, Inc. saves Hemlock Semiconductor $500,000 and keeps 29 tons of furniture out of landfill

SPACE, Inc. recently completed numerous interior office spaces at Hemlock Semiconductor Operations (HSC), the nation’s leading producer of hyper-pure polysilicon used in the semiconductor and solar industries.

Using SPACE anew—the company’s proprietary upcycling program— the team saved HSC almost $500,000 in furniture costs, while preventing 29 tons of furniture from entering the landfill. The project was completed in just four months.

“The SPACE anew program was the perfect fit for our goals, both from an operational standpoint and aligning with our commitment to sustainability and waste reduction. Our employees will thrive in their updated and aligned workspaces and we’re very pleased to complete this project in a way that minimizes our environmental impact.”

–Steven Holty, HSC’s sustainability leader.

Through SPACE anew, Hemlock Semiconductor contributed to a triple bottom line:

  • HSC employees received upcycled, more efficient workspaces to better connect their teams
  • The sustainability team received validated proof of positive impact on landfill waste reduction
  • Significant cost savings can be redeployed toward other business objectives

Located just west of Saginaw, HSC strongly emphasizes sustainability in every decision they make, as evidenced by their Clean Corporate Citizen (C3) designation from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).

Five years ago, SPACE introduced HSC to their SPACE anew program. The proactive facilities team at HSC allowed SPACE to inventory and store a large amount of the team’s furniture in warehouses—saving it for future upcycling opportunities.

In September of 2021, HSC’s purchaser authorized the beginning of a SPACE anew program on their campus. The goal was to reduce costs and streamline their staff’s physical workspaces for a more efficient workflow—over the course of just four months.

SPACE, Inc used an electronic inventory file—called the GreenDoc—to identify where each furniture asset came from and where it would now live.

  • Each furniture item was assigned a weight in pounds
  • Design experts entered exactly how much of each furniture type existed
  • Each item is assigned an end destination (upcycle, donate or throw away)
  • The calculator tabulates the total weight of furniture being reused
  • Using the plans for a brand-new design, SPACE designers detailed the dollar amount HSC saved by using SPACE anew

This program allows HSC to be certified through SPACE’s third-party partnership with Iris Waste Diversion Specialists.

“At SPACE, we’re committed to making workspaces efficient and beautiful while at the same time ensuring a focus on sustainable practices and reutilization. Our SPACE anew program perfectly aligns those two goals. The results are evident with our work at HSC. Our sustainability goals are in line with HSC and we’re proud to have kept 29 tons of waste out of Midland county landfills.”

Paddy Hobohm, SPACE, Inc. President.
