Transforming Public Spaces: How SPACE Helped Furnish a State-of-the-Art Community Center

Midland, Michigan

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Greater Midland embarked on a transformative $58 million investment to build a 120,000-square-foot state-of-the-art community center, that opened to the public in 20. This new facility serves as a central hub for public activities, wellness, and community engagement. SPACE collaborated with the client, architectural team, and construction manager to furnish the facility, ensuring a seamless integration of function, aesthetics, and sustainability.

THE RESULTS

  • Diverted 7,176 lbs of furniture from landfills through sustainable reutilization and employing circular manufacturing solutions.
  • Delivered $250,000 in cost savings through value engineering and strategic sourcing.
  • Completed on time and under budget to support the client’s grand opening.

“Working with SPACE, Inc. to furnish our new community center was an absolute delight. OUR APPROACH

SPACE took a collaborative approach to ensure the new community center met the diverse needs of its users. From the start, SPACE led programming meetings with stakeholders and coordinated site visits to other community centers and Haworth’s showroom, helping the client make informed, experience-based decisions.

Throughout design and implementation, SPACE held Live Design Reviews to align selections with project goals and provided phased budgets with value-engineering strategies to maximize savings. Leveraging special pricing agreements, the team delivered high-quality furnishings within budget.

Sustainability remained central to the project. SPACE developed a decommissioning plan to repurpose existing furniture, reducing waste, and provided on-site project management for a smooth installation. Even after completion, SPACE continues to support the center to ensure lasting satisfaction.
